Experimental voyages in existing square-riggers had proved beyond doubt that the vision and concept of integrating disabled with non-disabled people on a tall ship could without doubt be highly successful and safe. However, the experiments also proved that the vision could be best achieved with a purpose-built vessel. Naval architect Colin Mudie, who had been involved in the Jubilee Sailing Trust from the start, was commissioned to design what was to become STS LORD NELSON. The build commenced in 1984 and the ship sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton to Cherbourg on 17th October 1986 and was the first purpose built ship of her type in the world. STS LORD NELSON was a pioneer in the world of tall ships. She is the only vessel which has been designed and purpose-built to allow people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side on equal terms. There are eight wheelchair cabins with two bunks each, with the remaining accommodation being ‘dorm-style’. All beds are fixed single bunks. The vessel is equipped with additional measures to allow for disabled people to sail, including a speaking compass, visual and tactile alarms around the ship to supplement emergency announcements, disabled toilets, signage and diagrams in Braille, power-assisted steering for the ship’s wheel, wheelchair lifts around the ship, wider passageways, and tactile markers to assist the visually impaired in finding their way around.

Each year the JST takes around 2,000 adults to sea, both able-bodied and physically disabled. STS LORD NELSON can sail with up to 40 voyage crew, half of whom may be physically disabled and are guided through each task on board by eight or nine permanent crew members (professional seafarers) and three or more volunteer crew. The ship sailed around the United Kingdom, Western Europe the Canary Islands and the Caribbean.

From October 2012 to September 2014, STS LORD NELSON sailed around the world in the first JST circumnavigation, visiting thirty countries spanning all seven continents.

The Sail Training Ship LORD NELSON is being offered for sale so the Jubilee Sailing Trust can concentrate their efforts on TENACIOUS. This must be a totally unique opportunity to acquire a substantial an impressive tall ship to either continue as a sail training vessel or adapt to charter work, commercial ventures or conversion to an impressive private yacht. STS LORD NELSON was de-commissioned in July 2019 with only care taking work aboard since so will require systems, machinery and rig overhaul. Her previous certification and Lloyds classification have lapsed although these could be re-instated following surveys. STS LORD NELSON can be moved in Category D waters without certification and as such is located close to a dry dock, specialist boat repairs and riggers in the traditional quarter of Bristol’s historic floating harbour, only a short distance from the famous SS GREAT BRITAIN.
