The MG Spring 25 (designed by Tony Castro) has several features, which help differentiate it from many other 25 ft yachts. It offers standing headroom and 6 berth accommodation for comfortable cruising, while also featuring a winged keel, twin rudder and folding propeller for competitive club racing. An added bonus of the winged keel is that the boat has a draft of only 1m, allowing access to shallow coastal and estuarine locations.
This boat was built in 1988 and is currently berthed in the river Dart and kitted out for coastal cruising (see extensive equipment list). The hull, engine and rigging have recently been overhauled and renewed, respectively. The antifoul on the hull was stripped completely in 2020/21 and replaced with Hempel High Protect Primer and Hard Racing Antifoul paint. Since then the antifoul has been refreshed annually. All through-hull fittings and seacocks were replaced with bronze fittings in early 2021. A new (reconditioned) inboard diesel engine (Yanmar 1GM10) was also installed in 2021 and a new mast and standing rigging were installed in April 2022. Much of the running rigging was also replaced at the same time.
The sail wardrobe includes a Hyde mainsail, which although a few years old, still retains a crisp feel and good aerodynamic shape, a Crusader genoa with anti-UV strip and a Saturn Sails tri-radial spinnaker.
In the cockpit you’ll find extendable tiller steering, with a Raymarine ST1000+ tiller pilot autohelm. Theres an onboard compass and Simrad Cruise chart plotter and depth sounder to aid navigation, along with an Ecomax radar reflector on the mast. There is ample stowage under one of the seats for fenders, paddles, paddleboards etc.
The interior is comfortably appointed with a separate heads. There is also a private double aft-cabin, a double forward V-berth and two single berths amid-ships. The galley has a sink and gimbled alcohol burner stove. Opposite the galley is a map table and electric/instrument panel, replaced with new switch gear in 2023. The main and auxiliary batteries recharge from the engine via a split relay. There is also a solar panel for trickle charging the batteries.
